Taught by people who have done it.
W² exists because capable students lose marks they should keep, and very little tutoring addresses the real reason why. We teach maths the way it is genuinely understood, then train the exam technique that turns that understanding into a Band 6.
It started with an exam
W² opened in late 2024, and the first thing we ran was not a lecture. It was a full HSC-simulated mock exam. That choice says most of what you need to know about us: performance under exam conditions is where we started, and it is still the centre of everything we do.
We kept seeing the same pattern. A genuinely capable student, at a selective or top school, who clearly knew the content, would walk out of an exam having dropped marks they should have kept. They froze on a question that looked unfamiliar. They ran out of time. They wrote a correct method so unclearly the marker could not follow it. The standard advice was always to do more past papers, and it rarely helped, because the problem was never a shortage of content.
So we built a centre around the actual gap: teach the understanding deeply enough that hard, unfamiliar questions become approachable, then train the exam technique that gets a student credited for what they know. Small groups, problems we write ourselves, and mentors who have sat at the very top of these exams.
We teach why-first
We are a maths tuition centre first. We just teach the maths more deeply, and the exam technique sits on top of real understanding rather than replacing it. There is no shortcut to a Band 6; you understand your way there.
Understanding first
Every formula is built from first principles, and the reasoning behind hard problems is made explicit. When a student understands why a method works, an unfamiliar question becomes something to reason through rather than a wall. In Years 10 and 11 this is most of the work, and it is what turns Year 12 into a consolidation instead of a scramble.
Exam heuristics
Exam questions repeat the same underlying patterns. We train the best way into each one, and practise them until they become tools a student reaches for without thinking. A novel problem then becomes an assembly of familiar pieces, which is what separates a student who freezes from one who starts writing.
Writing for the marker
An exam is not only about whether you can solve a problem. It is about how clearly you communicate the solution under time pressure. We teach setting-out frameworks, deliberately plant errors for students to catch, and rehearse on papers that mirror the real HSC, so understanding turns into credited marks and exam day holds no surprises.
What makes W² different
A few things that take real work to build, and that are genuinely difficult to replicate. They sit at the centre of how we teach.
Exam papers that mirror the real thing
We write practice papers formatted to match the HSC exactly: the same look, wording and diagrams. Producing them takes hundreds of hours and purpose-built infrastructure, but the payoff is real. By the actual exam, the format is completely familiar, so you can focus on the maths rather than the surprise.
Problems we write ourselves
Every question is written in-house to target the specific traps and misconceptions students fall into. It is slow, deliberate work, and it is why our material does what a recycled textbook set cannot.
Learning to catch your own mistakes
In class, a mentor will deliberately include a wrong step and wait for the room to find it. It is a teaching instinct built over time, not a script, and it trains the alertness that stops careless marks slipping away.
Depth over memorisation
We teach for genuine understanding rather than memorised procedures. It is harder to teach and harder to learn, and it is the thing that holds up when a question looks nothing like the examples you practised.
Meet the mentors
Extension 2 is the hardest course in the HSC, and only a handful of students reach the very top of it each year. The people who founded W² are among them, and they teach the reasoning and exam technique of the top band from genuine experience.
William W
1st in Extension 2, Sydney Boys High (2022)
Came first in his cohort in the hardest course in the HSC, at one of the most competitive schools in the state. William teaches the deep, first-principles understanding that makes the top band reachable, and writes much of the original material students work through in class.
Tyson Lieu
State Rank #7, Extension 2 · 1st in MX2, Sydney Grammar (2025)
A verified Extension 2 state ranker who now teaches at W². Tyson has stood exactly where our students are trying to go, and teaches the execution and exam craft that lift a strong student to the very top.
New, and honest about it
We will not pretend to a decade of history we do not have. We opened in late 2024, and we would rather be straight about that and let our results, and a free class, do the convincing.
What we can point to is a strong first year and a guarantee that backs it. You can read the full record on our results page, or simply come and judge a class for yourself before you commit anything.
