Year 12 Extension 2 Maths Tutoring in Sydney

The hardest course in the HSC, and the one W² was built on. Complex numbers, mechanics, advanced integration and rigorous proof, taught by mentors who reached the very top of this exam, including a state ranker. Backed by a Band-6-or-fees-back guarantee.

Who this class is for

Year 12 students taking Mathematics Extension 2, the most demanding course in the HSC, who are aiming for a Band 6 / E4, and in many cases the very top end: a state rank, a 100, top-20-in-NSW. Extension 2 is where the hardest reasoning in the HSC lives, and where the difference between knowing the content and executing it under pressure is starkest.

What we cover

The full HSC Extension 2 course, taught with the depth the top band demands:

  • The nature of proof
  • Proofs involving inequalities
  • Complex numbers & the Argand plane
  • Complex numbers in exponential form
  • Vectors in three dimensions
  • Advanced integration techniques
  • Applications of calculus
  • Mechanics & resisted motion
  • Simple harmonic motion
  • Q15 / Q16-tier problem rehearsal

Inside an Extension 2 class

Extension 2 can't be memorised, so here's what an hour with us actually looks like:

  • A mentor works a complex-numbers proof on the board, deliberately slips in a wrong step, and waits, in silence, for the room to catch it. Spotting your own errors is the skill that saves the most marks in Q15–16.
  • You sit a problem you’ve never seen, then watch it broken down into the handful of recurring techniques it’s actually built from, so "I have no idea where to start" becomes "I know which tool opens this."
  • Your proof gets marked the way a real HSC marker reads it, every line of reasoning interrogated for whether it would actually be credited, not just whether you "got the answer."
  • You rehearse on papers replicated pixel-for-pixel from the real HSC: same font, wording and diagrams, until the real exam feels like one more Tuesday class.

And it's taught by people who reached the very top of this exam, so you're learning the reasoning of the top band from someone who's been there, not from a textbook.

Where this gets you

Picture the back of the paper, the questions that decide Extension 2, and you're calm, working methodically, while the room around you stalls. That's the shift. The first sign of it usually shows at your next Trial or half-yearly; the full band lift consolidates across the year.

It matters more here than anywhere else in your HSC: a Band 6 in Extension 2 can move an ATAR by 0.3–0.4, the exact margin students miss the medicine and law cut-offs by. And for the very top students, this is the course where a state rank becomes possible. The cheapest way to find out if we can take you there is a class that costs nothing.

What makes W² different

A few things that take real work to build, and that are genuinely difficult to replicate. They sit at the centre of how we teach.

Exam papers that mirror the real thing

We write practice papers formatted to match the HSC exactly: the same look, wording and diagrams. Producing them takes hundreds of hours and purpose-built infrastructure, but the payoff is real. By the actual exam, the format is completely familiar, so you can focus on the maths rather than the surprise.

Problems we write ourselves

Every question is written in-house to target the specific traps and misconceptions students fall into. It is slow, deliberate work, and it is why our material does what a recycled textbook set cannot.

Learning to catch your own mistakes

In class, a mentor will deliberately include a wrong step and wait for the room to find it. It is a teaching instinct built over time, not a script, and it trains the alertness that stops careless marks slipping away.

Depth over memorisation

We teach for genuine understanding rather than memorised procedures. It is harder to teach and harder to learn, and it is the thing that holds up when a question looks nothing like the examples you practised.

The Band 6 guarantee

Attend consistently, complete the weekly sets, and engage, and if you don't achieve a Band 6 / E4 in Extension 2 at the HSC, that subject's fees are refunded in full.

Conditions apply: consistent attendance, completed weekly work, and a baseline recorded at the start. This guarantee operates in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it matter who teaches Extension 2?
Extension 2 is the hardest course in the HSC, and only a handful of students reach the very top of it each year. W² was founded by people who did, including a state ranker who now teaches here. They teach the reasoning and exam craft of the top band from genuine experience, not just from a textbook.
I'm aiming for a state rank, can you help with that?
We coach the understanding and execution that the very top band demands, including the Q15/Q16-tier problems where ranks are won or lost. A state rank is the aspiration we help you climb toward, it can never be guaranteed (only a handful exist statewide each year), but the Band 6 floor is backed by our guarantee.
Can I take Extension 2 alongside Extension 1?
Yes, students taking Extension 2 also study Extension 1, and the courses reinforce each other. See the Extension 1 course for details.
It's part-way through the year, is it too late?
No. We've taken students who joined mid-Year-12 from Band 5 to Band 6. The first visible movement typically shows at the next formal assessment.
